This Apology Letter From A Dad To A Daughter Is As Real As It ...Mad over Marketing (M.O.M)

Here’s a father visiting his daughter’s home and realizing that all these years, he’s missed out on something very important. He sees his daughter come back from work, take care of her son, do the laundry and also make tea and dinner for the family, while the husband sits on the couch and watches television. A normal Indian household, right?

Instead of knocking some sense into his son-in-law, however, he finds himself responsible for this set up, and talks about that in his letter.

The one thing you can’t deny – this is very very real, and all of us have seen it happen.

Still from Vicks India Youtube.

Maybe we’re a little late to the party, but have you seen the new Vicks ad? It hits all the right spots, both aesthetically and in terms of social sensitivity. It’s based on a true story, of a girl whose biological mother died of HIV/AIDS when she was six years old, after which she was adopted by a trans woman. As Buzzfeed points out, the ad attemps to normalise trans motherhood, and does it really nicely.

Ideal child in the ideal nation: Gender, class and work in a school lesson by Nandini Manjrekar

Abstract
The influence of schooling on shaping childhood identity is a relatively under-researched area, especially within the Indian context. Although it is acknowledged that schools form significant sites of secondary socialisation, they tended to be treated as ‘black boxes’, leaving little scope for ethnographic and other inquiry into school processes which form a critical part of the lifeworld of the school child. These processes are distinguished by social markers like gender, class, caste, religion and location, which make the study of identity formation in childhood through schooling complex and challenging.
